Our Environment

Climate and Clean Energy

At HOKA we consider it our duty to protect the wild places where we love to move and explore; we believe we can use our scale, along with others in our industry, to fight climate change.

We strive to reduce our energy impact in our corporate offices, decrease our travel footprint, reduce our use of virgin petroleum-based materials, and work with our supply chain partners to reduce energy consumption. We seek to use renewable energy whenever possible and reduce our greenhouse gas emissions by utilizing preferred raw materials in our products and packaging, reducing our air travel, and optimizing our partnered manufacturing.

Carbon and Greenhouse Gas Emissions

The fashion industry is a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. The energy required to produce our raw materials, and assemble our products, has a large impact on our environmental footprint. To offset this, we work with raw material suppliers to source materials with lower greenhouse gas emissions and work with our supply chain partners to reduce their overall energy usage.

The transition of the majority of our production from China to Vietnam was a huge step forward in reducing our environmental footprint. China relies heavily on coal, whereas Vietnam emphases hydroelectricity, this alone reduces our overall footprint significantly. We have completed our packaging materials lifecycle assessment and have seen a savings in emissions. We look forward to completing our product materials LCA to further prioritize materials and reduce emissions.

We also recognize the opportunity to reduce other significant air emissions. Our Restricted Substances Policy sets forth our expectations of our supply chain partners when using substances that are known to have an environmental impact. We regularly review our policies to ensure we are up-to-date of all legal restrictions and provide ongoing training and monitoring of our partners so that they are aware of our stringent requirements.

Water

Our corporate offices have water mitigation programs in place and we encourage our supply chain partners to reduce their water usage. Additionally, we are studying ways to reduce our raw materials water usage and contamination while supporting organizations who are protecting our waterways and oceans.

Through our packaging lifecycle assessment we have saved over a 148 million gallons of water. Our raw materials lifecycle assessment has been deployed and we look forward to further prioritize materials, decrease our water usage, and reduce water eutrophication.

We look forward to completing our product materials lifecycle assessment to further prioritize materials to reduce our water usage and water eutrophication.

Waste

At our corporate offices we are taking steps to eliminate single use plastics and utilizing technology to create less waste. We are committed to ensuring that our Moreno Valley distribution center is a zero-waste facility by 2027.

We also monitor waste generation and waste diversion among the majority of our key supply chain partners. We are committed to doing our part to reduce our waste generation, and use the best diversion methods available, through the various channels of our business. We strive to reduce waste generation and properly dispose of waste, avoiding landfills or incineration without energy recovery. We manufacture primarily in Asia and are committed to doing our part to engage our global partners on proper waste management.

In 2017, we completed our packaging materials LCA and have saved millions of pounds of packaging through our efforts. We look forward to completing our raw product materials LCA to further prioritize materials, reduce waste, and improve our manufacturing processes.
