No stranger to fashion, costume designer, ZERINA AKERS’ career began at W Magazine, interning in the fashion closet. While pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Fashion Merchandising and Marketing from L.I.M., Zerina worked under some of fashion’s most accomplished stylists before venturing off to style personal clients and ad campaigns.

Since then, Zerina has been featured in publications such as Vogue, Forbes, Business of Fashion, and Essence. She is currently the costume designer for Beyoncé Knowles-Carter. Her client list also includes Chloe X Halle, and Niecy Nash, to name a few. Some of Zerina’s notable accomplishments include Beyoncé’s world famous On The Run II Tour, both the “Formation” and “Ape Sh*t” music videos, Chloe X Halle’s “The Kids Are Alright” film, and being on The Hollywood Reporter’s ‘Stylists & Stars’ list.
Always willing to go against the grain, Zerina loves experimenting, drawing inspiration from nature or history and mixing larger, well-known designers with emerging brands. She continues to champion Black creatives and supports new talent in various ways including her careful selection of looks created by Black designers for Beyoncé’s “Black Is King” film, and launching Black Owned Everything – a comprehensive directory of Black-owned businesses spanning fashion, beauty, art, and homeware.
For Zerina, fashion is not only about luxury; it’s about inspiring her clients to express their authentic selves. As a creative behind musical icons, Zerina personifies the synthesis of fashion and music.
HOKA: What is the inspiration behind the looks you styled?
Akers: I’m always inspired by color and functionality especially when dressing for work or working out.

HOKA: What about the HOKA shoes in particular inspired these looks?
Akers: The color combinations of the sneakers really allowed fluidity when dressing for these looks.
HOKA: Any go-to tips when styling sneakers?
Akers: Simply put… go for the wild ones! Have fun and experiment with new silhouettes and colors. Never be afraid of pairing your sneakers with more dressy items in your closet like a dress or suiting.
HOKA: What is your personal favorite look of the ones you styled and why?
Akers: My favorite look was the pink track suit with the blue sneakers. It’s always fun to color block when dressing with sneakers.

HOKA: What is your favorite of the HOKA shoes you styled and why?
Akers: The TenNine Hike Gor-Tex are a DREAM around my ankles. I’ve never hiked in a more comfortable shoe. These are definitely my go-to.
